All Things In Moderation
As always, I'm rubbish at posting on this blog, but a newspaper article the other day has spurred me into action.
Scientists have apparently discovered a drug called 'leptin' which will keep people thin for life if they are fed it at a young age, or if their mother eats foods which contain it whilst she is pregnant. The drug is present in breastmilk anyway, so this is a naturally occuring substance, but as with any new drug, there will have to be many tests before it goes into baby formulas. However, if the findings of this report are true, then it could cut the amount of obesity and diabetes in Britain.
Sounds good, no?
Well, actually... no. I don't think so. Yes, bringing down the amount of diabetes and obesity in this this country would be a good thing, no doubt, however what about teaching our children about moderation? It would be good thing to keep our children thin and healthy and avoid the risks of heart disease, but this should be done by teaching them to eat healthily and exercise regularly, rather than just giving them a drug that allows them to eat anything they want. I mean, if that is the kind of decadent and excessive lifestyle we are going to teach our children to accept, why don't we just let them kill themselves with alcoholism or worse, drugs? Research lately has also shown that the amount of people who are admitted to hospital with mental illnesses caused by illegal drugs such as cannabis has increased dramatically. We need to make people learn about the risks of such lifestyles and educate them about a safe and healthy way to live instead of giving them an easy way out from the start and taking away their responsibility for their own welfare, otherwise we are going to end up with a nation of people who see excess as ok and have an inability to say no.
